Technical Info

Our network at 52-chevy.net is not a large one but as you can see very diverse as far as equipment and manufacturer.

Hardware:

The internal network is connected through 1 1000Meg ethernet switch. The internet side is connected through a 2Wire 2700 Gateway Modem.

Firewall/Local DNS/DHCP/NTP server

The Firewall/local DNS/DHCP/NTP server is a IBM Pentium 4 Personal Computer running Red Webmin based on CentOS. It is equipped with 512Meg of ram, one hard drive, a cdrom drive, and 3 network interface cards (one facing the internal network, one facing the ADSL internet connection, and one for future). This box acts as the local DNS server, DHCP server, NTP server, router and firewall. As the network grows these tasks may be broken up and given to dedicated boxes. As it is running linux it is the ideal machine for the DNS and DHCP servers and will restart after a power interruption and resume its tasks.

Web/File Server

Installed after the devastation the last failing web/file server is a Dell Dimension 4300 P4 1.6 GHz machine also running Red Hat Linux Version 9. It is equipped with 1024 Meg of ram, currently one 7200 rpm 20Gig hard drive, and two 200 Gig 7200 RPM hard drive and a cd-rom drive, and a network interface card facing the internal network. This box is now the Web server and the main file server for the network with plans to install more hard drives as the need requires. This machine also does the job of external website backup machine.

Network Attached Storage/Backup Device

Due to disk space issues a D-Link 2 bay network attached storage was installed with 2 - 1 Terabyte drives. The drives are backed up in a Raid configuration.

Development

The development computer is an Pentium i7 machine running Windows 7. It is equipped with 12 Gig of ram, two hard drives with a combined storage space of 1 Terabyte,  a dvdrw drive, and a firewire card for capturing digital video. This box is the main work station for webpage developement, multimedia editing, and of course gaming.

Netbook

The netbook is a EeePC running Windows XP Pro. It is equipped with 2048Meg of ram, one 200 Gig hard drive. This machine is used primarily for keeping in touch while traveling, web page development, testing web page layout on different browsers, and making adjustments on the web server while on the road. We have purchased a digital camera and the laptop is now also used for storing and uploading pics to the server while not at home.

UPS

A very necessary piece of equipment since the creation of 52-chevy that prevents all the servers and high speed connection from going down/rebooting during power outages.

Software:

Web Development

We use a large variety of software for web develpoment. Below is a list of the most prevalent programs:
  • Adobe - Photoshop, Premier, Illustrator, and Acrobat
  • Macromedia - HomeSite
  • Zend - Zend Develpoment Studios
  • Bradsoft - TopStyle Pro

Server

Currently we are using Apache web serving software and PHP for most of our programming needs with the occasional javascript. All our pages are written in PHP with an attempt to make all pages XHTML complient. Using PHP also make things such as content management and dynamic web pages possible. A Mysql database has also been implimented for use with various aspects of the 52-chevy site, Dark French Host and the Regina Web Design businesses.
